Usage

Template:IPA is most useful when there are multiple instances of the IPA on a page. It contains

<span title="Representation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)" class="IPA">{{{1}}}</span>

I.e., it simply specifies CSS class IPA.

This allows fixing broken display of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) characters in MS Internet Explorer 6 for Windows, and choice of style in any browser.

The font declarations are in MediaWiki:Common.css. Registered Wikipedia users can specify their own style for IPA text by editing, for each project, their user style sheet, e.g. monobook.css. Users can also specify the style locally in their browser, which works across projects.

Example

Placing a phonetic rendering of the word characters in Template:IPA:

{{IPA|/ˈkærəktɚz/}}

The result will be a span with a class attribute, like this:

<span title="Representation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)" class="IPA">/ˈkærəktɚz/</span>

Which appears in your browser as:

/ˈkærəktɚz/

Without template:IPA:

/ˈkærəktɚz/

[The last two should only look different if you are using Internet Explorer 6 or lower on Windows, or if you have a custom style defined for IPA text.]

Please place all IPA text into Template:IPA, even if it doesn't have any special IPA characters, like this: /mi/. This will allow users to format all examples of IPA text consistently, with their choice of fonts, colours, etc.

Wikipedia offers several templates for proper display of IPA transcriptions.

In general, instances of the IPA on a page should be enclosed in the {{IPA}} template, which formats the text in an IPA-compatible font. If a substantial portion of a page is in the IPA, it is customary to post notice of that fact with {{IPA notice|lang=en}}, though each token still requires the {{IPA}} template for proper formatting.

However, if there are not enough occurrences to warrant a notice, then consider a template that links to an IPA key for the first instance of the IPA on a page or section:

  • for English language words, in a broad, non-regional transcription, as when giving the pronunciation of a key word in an article, use templates linking to IPA for English, a chart of the subset of the IPA that is relevant to English:
    • {{IPA-en}}, appearing as: IPA: /word/,
    • {{pron-en}}, appearing as: pronounced WP:IPA for English,
    • {{IPAlink-en}}, appearing as: IPA for English.
  • for foreign words that are not assimilated into English, regional pronunciations of English words, and non-standard English dialects, use templates linking to the more general IPA chart, containing all major IPA symbols:
  • for Australian English pronunciation specifically, use:
    • {{IPA-en-au}}, appearing as: Australian English phonology, or
    • {{pron-en-au}}, appearing as: pronounced Australian English phonology

For IPA keys dedicated to a specific language in broad transcription, there are:

  • for Armenian language:
    • {{IPA-hy}}, appearing as: Armenian pronunciation: WP:IPA for Armenian
  • for Czech language:
    • {{IPA-cs}}, appearing as: Czech pronunciation: WP:IPA for Czech
  • for French language:
    • {{IPA-fr}}, appearing as: French pronunciation: WP:IPA for French
  • for German language:
    • {{IPA-de}}, appearing as: German pronunciation: WP:IPA for German
  • for Hebrew language:
    • {{IPA-he}}, appearing as: Hebrew IPA: WP:IPA for Hebrew, or
    • {{IPA-he-small}}, appearing as: IPA: WP:IPA for Hebrew
  • for Hungarian language:
    • {{IPA-hu}}, appearing as: Hungarian pronunciation:WP:IPA for Hungarian
(though {{IPAr|hu|...}} is preferred)
  • for Irish language:
  • for Italian language:
    • {{IPA-it}}, appearing as: Italian pronunciation: WP:IPA for Italian
  • for Korean language:
    • {{IPA-ko}}, appearing as: Korean pronunciation: WP:IPA for Korean
  • for Polish language:
    • {{IPA-pl}}, appearing as: word (NB: this does not add square brackets), or
    • {{Audio-IPA-pl}}, appearing with soundfile as: WP:IPA for Polish (Ltspkr.png listen)
(though {{IPAr|pl|...}} is preferred)
  • for Russian language:
    • {{IPA-ru}}, appearing as: Russian pronunciation: IPA chart for Russian
  • for Spanish language:
    • {{IPA-es}}, appearing as: Spanish pronunciation: WP:IPA for Spanish

The template {{IPAr}} can be used to generate a properly linked transcription for any language, with optional soundfile, and (currently for Polish only) offers the ability to enter ordinary letters for conversion to phonetic symbols. See the template page for usage.

Note

The older inconsistently named (though still operational) templates {{IPA2}}, {{IPAEng}}, and {{pronEng}} are deprecated, and are to be no longer used.
